Program Overview

The McIntire School of Commerce and Singapore Management University are offering third-year Commerce students an opportunity to study International Business in Singapore during Spring Semester.

Curriculum

The curriculum is designed to provide the essentials of the courses you would have taken at McIntire during this semester, so you will not fall behind your classmates who do not study abroad. The skills you develop and the experiences you have in this program will surely be a very valuable part of your total UVA educational experience. SMU's course offerings are extensive, and all Commerce students will find a good selection of courses that interest them.

During the term abroad, students must complete four SMU offerings, for 12 UVA semester hours. In addition to those four courses, Commerce students must also complete the UVA-taught Global Strategy and Value Enhancement course, which will result in three transfer credits for Comm 3040 being awarded by certificate directly from McIntire. Each student must complete at least two business courses from the pre-approved list. Those two courses will satisfy your Commerce 3050 and 3060 requirements. Other business courses will transfer back as Comm 300X electives.

Finance and Marketing concentrators will be offered a special section of the required Comm 3720 and/or Comm 3330 in the fall of their fourth year.

NOTE: UVA accepts transfer credit (not grades) for courses taken abroad; however, students must receive a grade of C or better for each course to transfer credit back to UVA.

Application Process

Students should attend both the McIntire information session and the ISO General Information Session (GIS). After attending a GIS, students may complete the online "UVA Commerce: Third Year Core Abroad" application. Once admission is approved, students will be required to complete a SMU application packet and attend several orientation sessions during the months of November and December. Click here for Commerce school meeting dates, application and program deadlines, and upcoming program itinerary.

Housing

Because housing and living expenses are roughly equivalent between Singapore and Charlottesville, UVA students can expect the overall cost of their semester abroad to be similar to what they pay in Charlottesville plus travel expenses.

Degree Requirements

Please speak directly with McIntire regarding courses taken for elective credit.

This program is an Exchange program with tuition being paid to UVA. Additional information and details about the SMU program can be found on the SMU Web site.
