About Students will have opportunities to take an intensive French language course along with an interdisciplinary course on Moroccan civilization which will be supplemented by local guest speakers and field trips. Students will be integrated into the local community and culture. The program is coordinated and accompanied by a UVA faculty member Majida Bargach from the Department of French Language and Literature, and thus is ideal for students who want to study French language and have never traveled to North Africa. For those students with more knowledge of French language, this program will also provide a deeper immersion in a Franco-phone country in North African civilization and culture. This program is specially designed by UVA faculty to complement UVA curriculum. The program allows UVA students to earn UVA credit and UVA grades, not simply transfer credit. Students will receive nine credits for completion of this program. These credits can be counted towards major or minor requirements at UVA. Non-UVA students are welcome to apply.
15th Century Tower of Hassan, Rabat Location At the crossroads of civilizations, Morocco and its capital city of Rabat are located in the North West corner of Africa, only 9 miles from Europe. The capital of a modern nation, Rabat embodies the variety and contrasts of Morocco. Rabat is an ideal location for experiencing a successfully functioning multilingual society (Arabic, French, and Berber). The country is surrounded by the Mediterranean Sea on its northern coast, and the Atlantic Ocean on the western coast. The port city Tangier faces the southern most point of Spain, just across the Strait of Gibraltar. Travel Students will generally attend classes four or five days a week (Monday through Thursday), and will participate in group field trips and excursions. Students are expected to use the field trips to complete projects related to Moroccan development policies.
Field trips will include museums and monuments. Expected excursions will include: Marrakech, the Atlas mountains, the sand dunes desert, visits to Berber villages, Fes (the cultural capital), Meknes (imperial city), Volubilis (Roman Ruins), Casablanca (the economic capital), and Tangier and Tetouan on the Mediterranean Sea.
