About Up to two students from the University of Virginia will complete a three-week teaching practicum at the Centre de linguistique appliquée (CLA) in Besançon, France. The CLA is part of the Université de Franche-Comté. The CLA is the premier center for second language education and research on second language teaching and learning in France. CLA students studying English will benefit through contact with native speakers of English and through contact with U.S. university students as cultural informants. The UVA students will benefit from an intensive professional development experience, a chance to interact with faculty and students in a foreign country, opportunities to observe different types of language courses, and a chance to utilize the CLA's extensive resources on language learning and teaching.

Centre de linguistique appliquée Responsibilities The participants in LING 511Z will complete assigned classroom observations, plan and conduct conversation practice sessions for CLA students of English, and assist CLA faculty and staff as needed. The classroom observations will provide LING 511Z participants with opportunities to see and then reflect on a variety of instructional styles, different kinds of foreign language courses, and activities for language learners at different levels of proficiency. The participants will develop materials to be used in language learning activities that they plan and execute. The participants will be supervised by both CLA faculty and a UVA faculty member. On-Site Orientation Ms. Donna L'Hôte, Instructor at the CLA, and other CLA staff will provide information on the CLA, Besançon, and the logistics of the ESL practicum: curriculum, schedule of classes, practicum responsibilities, and working with French learners of English. Housing A home stay with demi-pension (half-board, i.e., breakfast and dinner) is recommended. Homestays are arranged by CLA staff.
