About
Shanghai MapThe EFL Teaching Practicum in Shanghai is intended for students interested in teaching, working in China or East Asia, or seeking a unique short term study abroad experience. Knowledge of Chinese is not necessary, but students interested in gaining fluency will have plenty of opportunities for practice. Enrollment will include up to ten students, who will teach at a Summer English Camp for upper elementary, middle and high school students in Shanghai, China. The site is a middle school in the Putuo district of Shanghai, Jiao Hua Middle School. Shanghai, a modern and international city, is a vibrant gateway for first-time visitors to China. Weekend trips to such places as Suzhou, known for its classical Chinese gardens, and others will be arranged to enhance participants' exposure to Chinese culture and history. Chinese students and teachers will benefit through contact with native speakers of English and opportunities for cultural exchange. The UVA students will benefit from an intensive professional development experience, a chance to interact with faculty and students in a foreign country, and an exceptional, low cost study abroad opportunity.

Teaching Responsibilities
Participants will teach in teams or individually for one to two hours each day, M-F. A local Chinese teacher will assist each class. The classes will focus on speaking, listening, and English games, songs, and plays. Some afternoons and all evenings will be free. In the prerequisite course, LING 509, participants will develop a number of lessons and supporting materials to be used in the English Camp. They will also learn methods of teaching English as a foreign language. The participants will be supervised by both Jiao Hua faculty and a UVA faculty member.
