How to Apply for Study Abroad

The actual application process for study abroad at UVA has never been easier. Most of the items needed to complete your application, including questionnaires and student contracts, can be done online and submitted at anytime during the application cycle. Some materials must be submitted in person to the International Studies Office.

  • All students attending either UVA programs or Non-UVA programs must submit an application to study abroad via the International Studies Office online application system.
  • Please note that all Non-UVA programs, typically known as third-party providers, including CIEE, IFSA-Butler, IES, School for International Training (SIT), Arcadia, and School for Field Studies (SFS), require you to submit a separate application, in addition to the one required by the International Studies Office at UVA. You will be asked to submit a "signature document" confirming that you have sent this application to the appropriate provider. These programs may also have their own additional application fees.

    • For these Non-UVA programs, your application to study abroad must be accepted by the International Studies Office. It is your responsibility to confirm acceptance with the program provider. Acceptance to study abroad by the International Studies Office in no way implies acceptance into Non-UVA programs. In fact, applicants for Non-UVA programs must adhere to the application procedures for and be approved by both the International Studies Office and the program provider.

  • If you are interested in participating in a program not currently offered by the International Studies Office, please see a study abroad advisor about completing the "Petition Process for a New Program".

Before you begin an application, we recommend you view this application tutorial slide show explaining the online application process. (The slide show is also available as a PDF).

Always keep in mind that at any point in the application process, Study Abroad Advisors are available to help you sort through the variety of choices. All study abroad advisors have scheduled times when students can make advising appointments. These appointments are made online and can help to narrow your options and to help you to decide on a specific program. Appointments are set up in blocks of 20 minutes, however you may request back-to-back appointments for longer sessions.
