Research Programs

Once you have identified your needs and have a clearer idea of what elements you are looking for in a program, narrowing the options becomes a much easier task. There are numerous resources to assist you through this process.

1. Identify the program model which best suits your needs. There are three models: UVA Programs, Exchanges, and Outside Programs. Remember that even within each model there remains some variance between programs.

UVA Programs are developed, directed, and often taught by University of Virginia faculty members. Students participating on these programs are predominately from UVA but, in some cases, may include students from other universities.

Credit Type: Direct Credit, Transfer Credit
Terms: Semester, Summer, January Term
Associated UVA Fees: Application Fee

Exchanges are bilateral or multi-lateral agreements established between UVA and foreign universities, which allow UVA students to study at an overseas partner university while students from the partner university study at UVA. Exchanges are "full-immersion" programs and UVA students will be taking courses with students from the host country. If English is not the language of instruction, students need to meet the host university's language requirement (typically four semesters) prior to participating in the exchange.

Credit Type: Transfer Credit
Terms: Semester, Year
Associated UVA Fees: Application Fee

Outside Programs are provided by program sponsors - other universities or private companies that facilitate students studying abroad for academic credit. Among these programs students can find a variety of locations, subject areas, levels of immersion, language of instruction, and excursion options. Besides traditional programs with classroom instruction, some program sponsors offer internships and other experiential learning opportunities.

  • Approved Programs: All outside programs listed on the Study Abroad website have been approved for UVA students' participation.
  • Affiliate Programs: UVA has entered into affiliation agreements with select approved outside program providers. Students attending affiliate programs enjoy the benefits of the established relationships between UVA and the program provider.
  • Petitions for Program Approval: Students wishing to participate in a program currently not listed on the Study Abroad website need to complete a Petition.  Petitions are approved on a case by case basis.

Credit Type: Transfer Credit
Terms: Summer, Semester, Year
Associated UVA Fees: Application Fee, Study Abroad Administration Fee, Continuous Enrollment Fee (See Budget: Approved Tuition and Fees)

3. Research Programs Online

  • Find a Program on the International Studies Office website
  • Consult search engines: www.goabroad.com, www.studyabroad.com,
    www.iiepassport.org
  • 4. Speak to Study Abroad Advisors and Academic Advisors.
Academic Advisors should be consulted well in advance when planning for study abroad, as they will be able to help you determine which courses should be taken here on grounds versus abroad. They will help you create a roadmap to ensure the most flexibility in choosing a study abroad program.

Study Abroad Advisors in the International Studies Office advise students on the various program offerings for their particular geographic speciality. They have an in-depth knowledge of cultural considerations, study abroad program offerings, financial aid availability, and the application process. Both sources are important in helping you select the appropriate program.

If you are in the College of Arts & Sciences, you may find the Study Abroad Transfer Credit Equivalency Database a useful tool for determining coursework that has been pre-approved for elective credit in the past.

    5. Consult students who have recently studied abroad. Peer Advisors are available in the Study Abroad Library Monday-Thursday from 10:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m. and Friday from 1:00 p.m. - 3:00 p.m. to talk with you about their experiences and share their insights. You can also read student evaluations, available in the Study Abroad Library. Many outside programs will put you in touch with students who have attended their programs and are willing to answer your questions.

    6. Speak with program representatives.
The ISO sponsors a Study Abroad Fair each semester where students can meet and talk with representatives from the various programs. Many program representatives also visit UVA individually to host information tables and speak with students. You are always welcome to call the program offices to speak with one of their admissions counselors.
